Nilavilakku is used in Kerala, Tamil nadu and other southern states of India. In Malayalam, Nilam is ground and Vilakku means lamp. In Tamil language also Nilam and vilakku have the same meaning. Nilavilakku play an important role at the presentation of various dance and art forms.
Lighting the nilavilakku is the first part of any auspicious event or ceremony. During the auspicious events like grahapravesha (housewarming), marriage etc., the Nilavilaku is lighted before even starting the initial rituals.
These traditional lamps are made of bell metal.
